BBC pundit raves about ‘invaluable’ Leeds United player, doesn’t get the appreciation he deserves

Patrick Bamford scored his eighth goal of the season and his fourth in five Championship games on Friday night as Leeds United beat Sheffield Wednesday – and Jon Newsome has praised the striker.

Bamford, 30, was on the receiving end of a beautiful cross from Junior Firpo last night – tapping home with his weaker right foot to continue his brilliant run of form since the new year. A really super goal.

Having had to wait for the first half of the season to make an impact, Bamford is one of a number of fringe players to come in around the new year and January – and shine for Leeds under Daniel Farke.

Himself, Willy Gnonto – who scored our second in the 2-0 win at Hillsborough – Ilia Gruev and Junior Firpo have all made themselves starting options and watching from the sidelines before the new year.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the match, former Leeds man Newsome was full of praise for the striker. He described Bamford as “invaluable” and thinks his work rate often goes under appreciated.

“He’s invaluable. He offers something that nobody at the football club offers. Mateo Joseph may fall into that mould in the future, but he does so much work and running – a lot of people don’t appreciate it.

“He stretches the game, chase lost causes. Not everybody wants to do that – it’s not that enjoyable. Invaluable to the football club,” Newsome said after the win over Wednesday, in which Bamford scored.

Just when Leeds needed him, he is coming good again. After a couple of years of struggling for form, game time and dealing with injury – Bamford has finally found his feet again, and at a crucial time.

Leeds needed goals with the form of Joel Piroe drying up and Bamford has stepped up. With just nine games left to play, Leeds look good for a place in the top two and if they are do it, Bamford is crucial.
