One veteran player will not be given the opportunity to play for the Atlanta
Falcons during the second Raheem Morris era.
The Falcons are releasing veteran tight
end Jonnu Smith, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.
Smith’s time in Atlanta is over after just one season due to the decision.
A former third-round pick, Smith did
pretty well for himself in that one season. He finished third on the team in
receiving yards with 582 (which was also a career-high for him) and tied for
second in receiving touchdowns with three.
Smith, a previous third-round selection, had a respectable one season. With 582
receiving yards—a career-high for him—he tied for second place on the squad
and finished third in terms of receiving touchdowns.
However, Smith, 28, is Kyle Pitts’ obvious TE2 in Atlanta. Morris, the new head
coach of the Falcons, will probably do a better job than his predecessor, Arthur
Smith, at integrating the team’s main weapons into the system.
Despite his impressive performance
history (he finished second on the Tennessee Titans with eight receiving
touchdowns in 2020), Smith eventually finds himself a bit of an outsider in
Atlanta. It is obvious that the Falcons are aiming for higher-ceiling play in among
their other explosive offensive additions from this offseason.
