The Portland Trail Blazers have so many injuries that they will start an all-rookie lineup against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night, which includes Kris Murray, Duop Reath, Scoot Henderson, and Rayan Rupert.

The Blazers state that Saturday night will only be the second occasion since starters started being tracked during the 1970–71 season that an NBA team has started five rookies.

The last club to start five rookies was the Golden State Warriors, who did so on April 26, 2012, against the San Antonio Spurs. Both clubs’ final game of the season ended in a 107-101 loss for the Warriors.

Deandre Ayton will miss a second game with left elbow tendinitis. Anfernee Simons will not play after injuring his left knee during Friday night’s loss to the LA Clippers. Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said Simons would undergo an MRI on Sunday.

Jerami Grant (hamstring) and Malcolm Brogdon (elbow) remain out, but Billups said he is hopeful both could return before the end of the season.

Simons started Friday with four rookies, Henderson, Camara, Murray and Reath.
From a competition standpoint, starting five rookies against the defending NBA champions is pretty much a recipe for disaster.
However, the Nuggets will be without Nikola Jokic (back and hip) and guard Jamal Murray (left ankle sprain).
So, maybe the Blazers’ rookies could work some improbable magic and pull off a victory.
