Ravens and defensive tackle reach a $98 million agreement. The deal provides Baltimore with an extra $11 million in cap room for a Super Bowl contender, which is possibly the most significant aspect.
‘Justin is one of the best defensive tackles in the entire NFL and a cornerstone on our defense,’ general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement three days after slapping the franchise tag on Madabuike. ‘We are thrilled for Justin and his family and equally happy for our fan base. This is a great way to start the new league year!’
The new league year begins next Wednesday, and the Ravens had already taken a step to prevent Madubuike from leaving when they put the franchise tag on him. The tag for defensive tackles came with a one-year cost of just over $22 million.
DeCosta remarked at the time that the group will persist in attempting to reach a long-term agreement with Madubuike, and things swiftly turned out as planned. Star quarterback Lamar Jackson was placed on the franchise tag by Baltimore last season; but, a few weeks later, the two sides came to an extended contract.
On Thursday, another player who received the franchise tag Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson — agreed to a four-year deal to stay with the Bears.
