Celtic player’s form raises questions about Brendan Rodgers

A lot has been made about Celtic’s transfer activity this season and how the club have not backed Brendan Rodgers enough. That is truth to a large extent. The Hoops certainly needed to show a lot more ambition than they did. But at the same time, one has to question whether the Northern Irish manager has made the most of the squad available to him.

Several players, who were brilliant under the management of Ange Postecoglou, have struggled. On the other hand, there are others who have not been handed enough chances to show what they are capable of.

not get the best out of Mikey Johnston. Since leaving on loan in the winter transfer window, to join West Brom Albion, the Republic of Ireland international has been out of this world.

Johnston’s latest performance saw him score a brace and provide an assist against Huddersfield Town. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has 6 goals and an assist in 9 appearances for West Brom Albion so far.

Just for context, Johnston’s best ever goal tally for a full season at Celtic is 6. He has matched that figure in a little over a month at West Brom Albion.

He quite clearly has found his feet in the Championship. Despite being the English second division, the quality of football is pretty good there though.

So, one has to question why things did not work out for Johnston at Celtic Park. Was it a matter of not getting enough chances to show his quality or something more?

Early on, most Celtic fans seemed happy enough to part ways with Johnston and seemed very open to a permanent exit in the summer. But as he continues to rack up the goals for West Brom Albion, that might be starting to change.
