Chris Sutton reacts to surprise Celtic announcement
Chris Sutton was quick to react to Joe Hart announcing his retirement from
goalkeeping- fortunately it will be at the end of this season and not immediately!
With two seasons of surprising success at Celtic under his belt, and hopefully
more trophies and recognition to come before the season ends, the former
England goalie has been a major influence in both of those seasons.
Hart has made the decision that this will be his last season after 138 Celtic
appearances. When July arrives, he won’t be putting his body through
another taxing campaign during the preseason.
At the end of this campaign, which should culminate at Hampden in the
Scottish Cup final, Hart, who turns 37 in April, will have given up.
Following the 2021 season’s disasters, in which Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain, and
Conor Hazard swapped goalkeeping responsibilities without conviction, Ange
Postecoglou resorted to Hart after Barkas and Bain had demonstrated a
glaring problem with defense in his three first-round matches.
Hart, who started as Spurs’ third choice, gave power and leadership to a Celtic
team that had lost three of its first seven SPFL games but went on to win both the SPFL title and the League Cup.
Hart completed a perfect sweep of titles the previous season, matching his medal
haul from Manchester City with a domestic treble.
There won’t be any more guessing as to Hart’s plans going forward; instead,
Celtic’s recruitment team will be the focus of the game, and Bain or Ben
Siegrist are unlikely candidates to replace Hart.
