Finance expert predicts how many points Nottingham Forest are going to lose

Football finance expert Stefan Borson has now been predicting how many points he thinks Nottingham Forest might be deducted.

He’s been speaking to TalkSPORT after Everton were handed four of their deducted 10 back earlier this week.

So, what has Borson said about the situation at Forest? Let’s take a closer look at how many points he thinks will come off…

What Stefan Borson has said about Nottingham Forest

Well, this is a hot topic in the world of football at the moment with Everton and Forest still facing fresh charges.

The case involving Forest will be heard this week and hopefully, a resolution can be agreed in the near future.

Given that Everton have been deducted six points, it’s hard to imagine Forest

getting any more than that – with the Toffees likely to get another deduction

Borson thinks there are certain factors that might work in the favour of Forest when it comes to determining their fate

He told TalkSPORT: “I’d be a little bit concerned if I was a Forest fan because

of the aggravating factors because it looks like they spent recklessly and that’s

something that will put them further up the scale of punishment.

Putting them further down the scale, however, is that they only breached one

year of the Premier League financial fair play and so when a team has been

promoted you have an allowance from the EFL for two of the years and a

Premier League allowance for one of the years. So in essence £61 million was the

target and in the two years in the EFL they were there or thereabouts, so they

may well get away with the first two years of that period – partly because

they didn’t breach very much. The Premier League won’t know how to deal with that because it’s not in their remit.

“I would think Forest are probably looking at something like two to three

points, plus the potential of some aggravating factor around the recklessness of the spending.

“I think it’s very unlikely that the paperwork surrounding Johnson

matches the tone of their appeal, so I suspect they will not get mitigation for

him. Therefore, it will be how big an aggravating factor is the recklessness

and how do they deal with this two-year stub when they were in the EFL.”

Forest face anxious wait

This was a fascinating interview with Borson. To a certain extent, he might

have eased any fears that Forest had of a huge points deduction coming their way.

The whole thing does feel pretty farcical. Forest and Everton are being dealt with

as a matter of urgency despite Manchester City having 115 charges hanging over their head.

All Forest can do for now is focus on football. Big games against Manchester

United and Liverpool are on the horizon and focus can’t be lost.

This interview with Borson is probably the best one yet from a Forest perspective.

It does seem ludicrous that the club will be punished for a three-year cycle; when

two of those years saw the club playing in the EFL.

Only time will tell and hopefully, Forest can soon get this whole situation
