“I think that’s crazy” – Pundit reacts as Derby County sign Dwight Gayle

  • Dwight Gayle’s arrival at Derby County on a short-term deal could elevate their chances of securing automatic promotion in the Championship.
  •  Carlton Palmer commended the club’s quick response to James Collins’ injury by securing the free agent Gayle for reinforcement.
  •  Currently in second place in League One, Derby aims to capitalize on Gayle’s experience and goal-scoring abilities for a promotion push.

The forward left Stoke City when the January transfer window closed, after

both the player and the team decided to end his contract.

As a result, the 34-year-old is now available for the Rams to sign as a free

agent, strengthening their offensive options as they aim to challenge for the Championship.

Before leaving the Potters, Gayle played just 10 times for the team in the league

due to her lack of form (all stats courtesy of Fbref).

However, James Collins’s chronic injury has left Derby with very little choice, which is how he ended up at Pride Park.

Carlton Palmer: Dwight Gayle “could be an inspired signing”

Following Collins’ knee injury, Derby made the right move in bringing Gayle

into the team, as Carlton Palmer has commended.

If Gayle stays healthy and gets off to a quick start, he thinks the forward might

mean the difference between finishing in an automatic promotion spot and securing a play-off spot.

After learning that top goal scorer James Collins might miss months due to a knee

injury, Derby County acted quickly, Palmer told Football League World.

“They signed Dwight Gayle quickly, giving him a deal through the end of the season.

Since he wasn’t affiliated with any clubs, he was accessible for free.

The news that Collins has been ruled out is bad for Derby County.

“Paul Warne made a valiant effort to sign either Michael Smith or Lee Gregory

from Sheffield Wednesday, but he was unable to come to an agreement.

for them to a promotion.

They’re in second position right now, and two spots advance automatically, so he took a bet on Dwight Gayle.

“He’s a proven prolific player in the Championship, and if he can get going

right away and stay healthy, this could be a great addition until the end of the season.”

“Although it didn’t work out for him at Stoke, I don’t think he’s past his best at

34 since he knows where the back of the net is—in a higher division, to be exact.

Derby County have reached an agreement to sign Dwight Gayle as a free agent.

The forward departed Stoke City following the end of the January

window, with the player and club mutually agreeing to terminate his contract.

This has opened the door for the Rams to sign the 34-year-old as a free agent,

bolstering their attacking options as they look to push for promotion to the Championship.

Gayle struggled for form with the Potters, featuring just 10 times for the

club in the league before departing (all stats from Fbref).

But a long-term injury to James Collins has left Derby with very few other

options, leading to his arrival at Pride Park.

Carlton Palmer: Dwight Gayle “could be an inspired signing”

Dwight Gayle

Carlton Palmer has praised Derby’s decision to bring Gayle into the club following Collins’ knee injury.

He believes that the forward could be the difference between finishing in an

automatic promotion place and earning a play-off spot, as long as Gayle remains fit and hits the ground running.

“Derby County have moved swiftly on hearing the news that leading goal

scorer James Collins was going to be out for months with a knee injury,” Palmer told Football League World.

“They have moved swiftly in signing Dwight Gayle on a contract until the end of the season.

“He was available on a free, as he wasn’t attached to any club.

“It’s unfortunate news for Derby County with Collins being ruled out.

“Paul Warne tried desperately to try to bring Lee Gregory or Michael Smith

from Sheffield Wednesday, but wasn’t able to agree a deal for either one of those players.

“Yes, he needs the firepower to help them get promoted.

“They’re currently sat in second place, two go up automatically, so he’s taken a chance on Dwight Gayle.

“As proven, he’s prolific in the Championship, and in a short-term deal,

and if he’s fit and can hit the ground

running, this could be an inspired signing until the end of the season.

“It didn’t work out for him at Stoke, but he knows where the back of the net is,

he knows where it is in a higher league

above, so I don’t believe he’s past his best at 34.

Derby are currently second in the

League One table, leading Bolton Wanderers in third by three points.

However, Ian Evatt’s side has two games in hand, which could lift them into the

automatic promotion places with positive results.

Warne will be hoping to guide the Rams back to the second tier at the second

time of asking, having finished seventh in the table last year.

Next up for Derby is an away game against promotion rivals Barnsley on 24 February.

But Ian Evatt’s team still has two games

left, and if they do well, they could move up into the automatic promotion spots.

After finishing seventh in the table the previous season, Warne will be looking

to lead the Rams back to the second division at the second time of asking.

Derby’s next match is on the road on

February 24 against Barnsley, a team vying for promotion.

Gayle has potential for Derby

Gayle might be one of Derby’s most important short-term acquisitions.

This forward has demonstrated his ability as a productive Championship

striker and has a plenty of Premier League experience.

He might still be of great assistance to

Warne’s team in their quest for a top two finish, even if he is past his prime.

He will probably play a lot of minutes because of their current dearth of

offensive alternatives, and he will

provide the squad the attacking focal point it needs.

This will have shown to be a wise purchase if he can score a few goals

between now and the end of the campaign as well.
