Mac Jones’ tenure with the Patriots has finally come to an end after three years in New England.

ESPN reports that the organization is nearing completion on a trade that would send quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

The deal won’t be finalized until Jones passes a physical on Wednesday, when the new league season gets underway.

Jones just finished a disappointing season in which he completed 224 of 345 passes for 2,120 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Due to an injury sustained early in the season and poor on-field play, former head coach Bill Belichick benched him after 11 games in favor of Bailey Zappe.

Jones began his three-year tenure with the team after being selected 15th overall in the 2021 draft. In his rookie season, he started all 17 regular-season games, leading the Patriots to 10-7 and clinching a wild-card round playoff berth. To cap it off, he was selected for the Pro Bowl that year as an alternate.

Since then, he has struggled to produce as quarterback as the team had numerous offensive coordinator coaching changes in the next two years. In three NFL seasons, he has 36 interceptions and 46 touchdown throws.

The Jacksonville native will now return to his hometown to face off against C.J. Beathard for Trevor Lawrence’s starting backup position.

Following a 4-13 campaign, the Patriots were awarded the #3 pick in the 2024 draft. As a backup quarterback, they will probably select between North Carolina’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. On their quarterback depth chart right now, they have Nathan Rourke, a second-year player, and Zappe.

A sixth-round pick grants the team an extra pick in the sixth round of the 2024 draft in addition to eight total selections, since they previously had one pick in each round. But in the last year of his rookie contract, Jones will count $4.96 million against the team’s salary cap.
