It’s no secret that Tom Brady’s departure in 2020 was a blow to the Patriots. In 2021, Mac Jones couldn’t fill the shoes of the seven-time Super Bowl winner, and from 2022, Bailey Zappe had serious problems moving his offense
Jones was the Pats’ first pick in the 2021 draft, and Zappe was selected in the fourth round. In the 2024 Draft, New England has the third overall pick, and most analysts agree that they will use their turn to call a new signal-caller, or at least that’s what they hoped until Mayo dropped the bomb: Jacoby Brissett is in the race for the starting position.
“A guy like Jacoby, he’s a great leader. Everyone loves him. To get him back in the building is definitely helpful for us. And honestly, look, he could absolutely be our starter this year,”Mayo said in an interview.
And if that were not enough to cause the ire of the fans, the head coach insisted: “We’ll have to see. Like I said, we’re not dead-set on taking a quarterback at No. 3, but we do feel good having a guy like Jacoby ready to go.”
Brissett had a brief stint with the Patriots in 2016, his rookie year, and then was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. On March 2024, the quarterback signed a one-year deal to return to the team.
In his nine-year career, the North Carolina State product has completed 981 passes in 1,600 attempts, with 10,574 yards gained, 51 touchdown passes, and 23 interceptions.
