Leeds United caught in ‘absolutely ridiculous’ situation to stun Sky Sports pundits live on air

Clinton Morris has backed Leeds United and Leicester City to seal automatic promotion from an “absolutely ridiculous” Championship top four.

The Sky Sports pundit spoke live on the broadcaster’s coverage of the Whites 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday on 8 March, to marvel at the standard being set by the top sides in the division.

Host David Prutton called the numbers racked up by the Whites, Foxes, Ipswich and Southampton “stunning”, with Morrison blown away by the race for the top two places and a direct route into the Premier League.

Prutton said (7.46pm): “By far the most points accumulated by the top four at this stage in a Championship season in the last 20 years. I mean that is a stunning statistic Clinton isn’t it?”

Morrison replied: “It’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous, the top four. It’s been brilliant. You can ask us, ‘who’s going to be the top two?’ It changes all the time. I’ve been saying all season it’s going to be Leicester and Leeds.

“Ipswich won’t go away. Southampton are still in the mix. Them four have been outstanding, the four best teams, but I’m still going to go Leeds and Leicester to get promoted.”

The numbers this season have been huge and were it not for that fact Daniel Farke may well have had a immediate return to the Premier League in the bag by now.

The Whites have been relentless since the turn of the year, with only the draw against Huddersfield keeping them short of a 100% league record in 2024.

But there are signs of the pressure starting to tell elsewhere, with the victory at Hillsborough on Friday night backed up by dramatic defeat for Ipswich the following day, then Leicester drawing with Hull City for their fourth consecutive game without a win.

That leaves Leeds United second by a single point and with all sort of momentum behind them as they look to finally overcome their slow start to the campaign and reach the top of the table.

Were it not for the chaos that characterised the summer, with relegation followed by a takeover, a new manager and extensive transfer business, Farke might already be even better off than this, but the current situation still leaves little margin for error with three clear rivals capable of bumping the Whites into the play offs
