Leeds United: Don Goodman shares ‘crazy’ advice after Daniel Farke sack talk at Elland Road

Don Goodman says any Leeds United fans who wanted to see the back of Daniel Farke earlier in the campaign are “crazy”.

Pressure was mounting on Farke at the end of December following successive away defeats to Preston North End and West Brom.

That left Leeds down in fourth place, nine points off the top two, but they have since gone on a club-record equalling nine-game winning run.

A 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at the weekend halted that streak, with Leeds now two points off Ipswich Town in second place.

And Farke has well and truly won over supporters since that low point at The Hawthorns a little over two months ago

Goodman told MOT Leeds News: “I’d have said to any Leeds United fan calling for Daniel Farke’s head at the end of December ‘don’t be crazy’.

This is a man who knows what it takes to win the league, twice doing so with Norwich sides that probably weren’t as good as this Leeds one.

“So it was only a matter of time for the players to gel, others to get fit, and I never felt they would be out of the race for the top two.

“At the same time, did I see them winning nine in a row? Probably not. I expected them to be in the mix but they’ve now gone beyond that.“

Leeds United have made Elland road a fortress

Goodman added: “They lost away at West Brom and Preston at the end of December and their form was patchy – they weren’t flowing the way they’re flowing now.

“But it was the away performances that was holding them back. At home they were always good and still remain unbeaten.

“So the key was how could they turn around those away performances. They beat Cardiff away in early January and haven’t looked back

“That’s despite going to some difficult places like Bristol City, like Plymouth Argyle, who were previously unbeaten in nine.

“You’ll often hear the word ‘momentum’ mentioned in football – it really is a massive thing.”

Leeds United relying on Ipswich Town to slip up

Leeds may yet rue their slow start to the campaign, but what we have seen since the start of January is nothing short of remarkable.

Prior to the Huddersfield draw, the Whites collected 27 points from a possible 27, keeping seven clean sheets across those nine games.

Even accounting for the two points dropped at John Smith’s Stadium, Leeds are still Europe’s most in-form side this calendar year.

The key for Farke now is getting the momentum going again when Stoke City visit Elland Road on Tuesday (5 March).

Leeds’ automatic promotion hopes are technically no longer in their own hands as Ipswich are two points better off.
