Leeds United: Phil Hay instantly reacts as Leeds utd star sale mooted ahead of summer transfer window

Phil Hay has responded after Archie Gray was tipped for a Leeds United exit this summer if the club fail to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Gray has been one of the standout performers for Leeds this season after breaking into the side as a 17-year-old, with clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United linked with a transfer move for the midfielder-turned-right-back.

And while appearing on The Square Ball podcast (8 March, 24:00), Hay failed to settle any nerves when the possibility of an exit was brought up.

“The real hand rigging begins when we don’t go up and we have to sell Archie Gray,” said host Michael Normanton, before Hay responded immediately.

“What a happy thought,” he said sarcastically.

Archie Gray can’t leave Leeds United

If Leeds fans could make one wish come true about the current playing staff at the club, it is probably fair to say most would wish that Gray never leaves Elland Road.

The player has come into the squad and been simply breathtaking with his performances no matter the opposition, and it’s no surprise the media are already trying to take him away from the club.

But the player himself has already mentioned that he sees his long-term future being with Leeds and considering he isn’t even 18 yet there is absolutely no rush for him to move on if we can’t provide the opportunities he wants.

If the player clearly outgrows Leeds and wants to win trophies and play in Europe then fans will always understand that, but it doesn’t need to be now or any time in the near future.

Promotion would go a long way to helping to keep him around and help him reach his potential, but it’s not the be-all-and-end-all and fans have to stop thinking negatively about the situation.
