The Rockets from Houston are in free fall. Houston’s makeover appeared to be finally complete after the team’s 13-9 start to the season suggested that the core of Jalen Green, Alperen \engün, and the offseason acquisitions of Dillon
Brooks, Fred VanVleet, and coach Ime Udoka was working. Since then, the Rockets—who are currently firmly rated 11th in the NBA Western Conference—have dropped to 20-22 and are no longer in contention for the playoffs.
Jalen Green is the perfect scapegoat for Houston, which is in dire need of one. He is averaging only 16.4 points since the beginning of the year on a dismal 27 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The 2021 NBA Draft’s second-round
selection has never demonstrated growth and is still a high-volume, ineffective scorer.
The Rockets selected Cam Whitmore from Villanova and Amen Thompson from Overtime Elite with the fourth and twentieth picks, respectively, in the 2023 draft. Both were safe, high-upside draft selections, but owing to injuries
and a general lack of playing time, they had poor starts in the NBA.
But since the beginning of the year, the young team has been unstoppable, demonstrating that Whitmore was one of the draft’s steals and that Thompson is every bit as good as his twin, Ausar. Green’s decline has persisted.
