“Pole position” – Pundit reacts as Sheffield Wednesday plot Leeds United transfer

Here Carlton Palmer shared his thoughts about Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in signing Ian Poveda to FLW.

Sheffield Wednesday will be in a prime spot to sign Ian Poveda from Leeds United if they stay in the Championship.

The Owls are currently in a healthier position but still face critical matches against Rotherham United and Plymouth Argyle.

While the club seems keen on Poveda, they should prioritize their current status before focusing on summer transfers.

Former England midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Sheffield Wednesday will be in pole position to sign Ian Poveda from Leeds United in the summer if they retain their Championship status.

It was reported earlier this week by the Sheffield Star, that Wednesday are keen on signing Poveda on a permanent basis this summer.

The 24-year-old joined the club on loan from Leeds at the end of the January transfer window, and so far, he has made a positive impact during his time at Hillsborough.

Poveda has made five appearances for the Owls so far in his loan, with four of those games coming as a starter. But his future beyond this loan remains unclear, as his loan will end this season and he will then return to Leeds, where his contract also comes to an end.

Wednesday seem keen to land Poveda on a permanent basis, but for that to happen, it might mean that the Owls need to retain their Championship status.

Carlton Palmer: Sheffield Wednesday in pole position to sign Ian Poveda if they stay in the Championship

Here, we asked former England midfielder Carlton Palmer for his thoughts on Sheffield Wednesday being interested in signing Ian Poveda on a permanent basis from Leeds United.

Palmer thinks the Owls would be in pole position to sign the player should they remain in the Championship, and he believes the player will want to join the club on a permanent basis.

Palmer exclusively told Football League World: “Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl have made it known of their interest in signing Ian Poveda, who has been outstanding in recent weeks and has seen Sheffield Wednesday give themselves a real-life line in staying in the Championship.

“They have two critical games coming up, with Rotherham United away and Plymouth Argyle at home. They have given themselves a real chance, so Poveda has already become a fan favourite, he’s excelled at Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl is doing a fantastic job and is giving these players loads of confidence.

“So Sheffield Wednesday would like to sign him, I would assume, but that will depend on which division they are in, so this will be talked about at the end of the season.

“Should Sheffield Wednesday retain their Championship status, then I think they would be in pole position to sign Ian Poveda, who I believe is out of contract at the end of the season.

“He’s 24, so he’s at the right age and whatever happens he is going to be a free agent, and he is going to be a very hot commodity, but Sheffield Wednesday retain their status. I’m sure, working under Danny Rohl and Chris Powell and the backroom staff there, that he will want to join the club on a permanent deal.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s league position

Sheffield Wednesday are continuing their fight to beat the drop, with the club now in a healthier position than they were a few months ago.

With 12 games remaining in the league, Wednesday currently sit in 23rd place on 32 points, three behind Stoke City and QPR in 22nd and 21st, respectively.

Despite still being in the relegation places, the Owls have been in very good form lately, with three wins out of the last four games, form that has dragged other teams into the relegation fight.

Wednesday are back in action this Saturday, as they travel not too far for a Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United, which is a big game for both sides.

Sheffield Wednesday need to concentrate on this season before looking to sign Ian Poveda

Obviously, as games start to tick down, we are getting closer and closer to the next transfer window, but at this stage, Sheffield Wednesday need to be concentrating on their football.

The Owls are in a much better position than they could have anticipated a few months ago, so they don’t want to let that slip at this stage of the campaign

Therefore, talk of what may or may not happen in the summer needs to wait, as if they were relegated to League One, it is unlikely they will sign Ian Poveda anyway.
