SAD NEWS:Bailey Zappe has terminate his contract with the New England Patriot following a misunderstanding with the…
With the New England Patriots having signed to terms with veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett this week, the 24-year-old appears to be the obvious odd man out in the quarterback room. Zappe projects to be a third-string quarterback at best and a cut candidate at worst if the Patriots utilize the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on a quarterback, as many anticipate.
But as of for now, Zappe is officially New England’s quarterback one, with Brissett still off the official roster and Mac Jones out of the picture. And that’s how he’s acting.
This week, Zappe is in Oregon, working out with a number of Patriots pass catchers, such as Tyquan Thornton, DeMario Douglas, and Kendrick Bourne. On their Instagram stories, Zappe and Bourne both posted footage of themselves throwing passes to their Patriots teammates.
With all due respect to Nathan Rourke, Zappe is the only quarterback on the squad with real NFL experience, having started all six of New England’s 2023 games as their starter. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be in charge of these sessions. While he has little control over his future, he does have some over how he spends his offseason, so he’s taking the initiative and working with some well-known Patriots players.
What does Zappe’s future hold, though? With a deal worth just $985,000 this season, the 2022 fourth-round pick will become a restricted free agent in 2025. He’s 4-4 in eight starts over two seasons as an NFL starter, but given his salary and ability to at least play, the Patriots should consider retaining him on the roster as a backup quarterback in case of emergency behind Brissett and the rookie they draft.
However, after two difficult seasons with Jones and Zappe in the quarterback room, new head coach Jerod Mayo might want a complete QB reset. Since Jones only received a sixth-round pick in return, a trade appears doubtful, so if New England wants to start again, Zappe would probably need to be released outright.
The most likely outcome is that Zappe stays on the roster through minicamp and the draft at the very least. The Patriots will then assess Zappe’s value as a starting quarterback as the season approaches.
