Mets reliever Jake Diekman, who previously played with J.D. Martinez in Boston in 2022, called the new Mets designated hitter “the smartest hitter ever.” The slugger has long since earned that reputation.

Because of this, we were taken aback when Martinez gave an explanation to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo regarding why he had turned down a rumored offer from the Giants earlier in the winter. It appears that he felt his skills would not be well suited at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park.

“People are going to say that I’m old, washed up, and kind of done if I go there and hit.260 with 20 [home runs],” Martinez stated. “I’ll find myself out of the game.” I desired to present the greatest possible chance to myself.
