In addition to scoring 50 points off the bench, Flynn also contributed six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and 18 of 25 field goals (18 of 9 from beyond the arc). It was an impressive performance.
In the middle of a challenging season that saw them qualify for the NBA draft lottery for another year, the Pistons needed every basket Flynn scored to even keep this one close. Their next-highest scorers were Jalen Duren and Marcus Sasser, both with 11 points.
When it comes to basketball, there are two ways to expect the unexpected: either fans will be amazed by a reserve’s explosive offensive performance right off the bench, or they will expect to see elite players do moves that no other player can.
Malachi Flynn, a guard for the Detroit Pistons, experienced the latter. He set NBA history on Wednesday night by scoring 50 points off the bench in a loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
Flynn’s exhibit Pistons supporters may celebrate him for entering the record books in addition to marveling at what he accomplished on Wednesday. He is the only player in NBA history to attain such stats off the bench, according to StatMuse.
He not only enrolled in a class by himself, but he also enrolled in several classes with guys who were All-Stars. By scoring fifty points or more and shooting at least seventy percent from the field, he joined the ranks of players who had similar stat lines in a game, including Luka Dončić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jalen Brunson.
In fact, his effort coming off the bench made history as only the third player to record 40 or more points in a game.
