Sunderland AFC co-owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has reiterated to fans that the decision to repaint the Black Cats Bar at the Stadium Of Light in Newcastle United colours for January’s FA Cup derby clash was a grave mistake.

The decision to decorate the hospitality area in black and white, finished with pro-Newcastle banners, in the days before the match enraged supporters, who demanded a reversal. The club admitted serious fault and restored the original furniture ahead of game day.

Now, Louis-Dreyfus has reaffirmed the club’s acknowledgement of their mistake and insisted that fans are still at “the heart of all that we do” in a statement given to a Supporters’ Collective meeting on March 12.

In it, the 26-year-old – who could not attend the meeting – said: “Following the conclusion of an internal investigation requested by the Club’s Board of Directors, we identified that a serious error in judgement was made in relation to the Black Cats Bar.
