These two PL players rejected Leeds United, but they’re now paying for their Elland Road snub

Leeds United were dealt a harsh dose of reality in the summer when key transfer targets opted for Premier League moves over heading to Elland Road, with Sheffield United snatching two of them.

Relegation from the Premier League in 22/23 forced Leeds back into the Championship where the 49ers’ first task as new owners was cleaning up the mess left by Andrea Radrizzani and rebuilding a squad that could bounce back at the first time of asking.

In the process, they looked to be ambitious with a number of eye-catching signings, but there were plenty that could have joined too if not for Premier League interest scuppering Leeds’ chances.

Two stars of the 22/23 Championship campaign that Leeds fancied their chances of signing were midfielder Gustavo Hamer and striker Cameron Archer – formerly of Coventry City and Middlesbrough (on loan from Aston Villa) last term.

However, reality bit for Leeds as both headed further south in Yorkshire to Bramall Lane with newly-promoted Sheffield United – costing a reported £15million and £18million.

Their decision to go to the Premier League was fair enough at the time, with that offer hard to turn down even if Leeds had plans to be there not long after in 2024.

Not only that, but the price tags eventually paid up by the Blades proved that Leeds just didn’t have the muscle to compete, even with a side heavily fancied to fall out of the trapdoor immediately.
