‘Unbelievable’… Danny Murphy predicts where Leeds United will finish in race for the top two

The race to finish in the Championship’s top two is garnering plenty of attention after another instalment of results on Tuesday – and Danny Murphy thinks Leeds United have a strong chance.

Leeds remain in third despite a tenth win in 11 league games on Tuesday night, as the Whites held on to beat Stoke City at Elland Road. Gaining revenge on the reverse fixture, Leeds secured a narrow 1-0 win.

It looked as if Leeds might have gained second place, with Bristol City leading twice over Ipswich. But, Kieran McKenna’s deeply impressive side came from behind to win 3-2. Leif Davis inspiring a victory.

Southampton play tonight, playing Preston at home. A tricky game with the wheels slightly coming off Russell Martin’s side of late. A win takes them to within two points of third-placed Leeds, tonight.

Leicester remain top after overcoming Sunderland away from home last night – and are still three ahead of Ipswich. Murphy gave his take on the run in on TalkSPORT (06/03, 10.10AM), on Wednesday morning.

“The Leeds game was unbelievable. I think they [Leicester] will get over the line, then it’s between Leeds and Ipswich. I was rooting for Leeds the other week because I’ve got a little soft spot for them,” he said.

Danny Murphy says second place is between Leeds and Ipswich

Ipswich are back on song and their work in the January transfer window is paying dividends. Kieffer Moore for example, a target for Leeds, has scored five goals since his move on loan from Bournemouth.

With 10 league games to go, it does seem as though it will be a shootout between Ipswich and Leeds for second. Leeds are probably the better side – but Ipswich continue to surprise all with their run of form.

To discount Southampton from the race for the top two would be unwise given what they are capable of, but as things stand – and as Murphy predicts – it does look like it will be between Leeds and Ipswich.
