Ethan Ampadu doesn’t necessarily shudder, but the visceral reaction to the notion that the 23-year-old, at the tender age of just 15 was potentially bossing older players around isn’t receptive.

At the word marshall the former Chelsea starlet and current Leeds United captain bristles. At ordered, he jumps in.

“I don’t know about ordering,” Ampadu says, still cheerful but, as ever, convicted. “Leadership isn’t something I’ve worked on or spoken about trying to do. I understand there’s a bigger responsibility in wearing the [captain’s] armband, it’s a massive honour. But for me I’m just trying to play the same game.

Ampadu has been tipped for the Wales captaincy since walking onto the pitch for former Wales boss Chris Coleman’s pre-Euro 2016 training camp. Ampadu remembers the day: his dad, former professional footballer Kwame Ampadu, was driving, feeling like a “very, very nervous young boy” and chatting with Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies to quell the nerves.
